Would lasik resolve or worsen dry eye problem?Nenita My eyes are getting drier after wearing contact lense for 15 yrs. I couldn't wear contact lense comfortably for long hours & have to apply lubricant eye drops constantly. I'm 36 yrs old residing in Malaysia. Would LASIK resolve or worsen dry eye problem?
Hershel it's unlikely to resolve itdry eyes is one of the known (and ocacsionally permanent) side effects of laser eye surgery; if you have an existing condition, i don't think this would help
Cecelia LASIK will not fix a dry eye problem. However, when you go in for LASIK or PRK surgery the laser center typically recommend plugs for your bottom tear ducts to slow the draining of the moisture in your eyes. You should still be able to get the plug put in which is a very fast, painless process and might be covered under your medical insurance.LASIK and PRK surgery will make your eyes dryer until the nerve endings in the eyes around your iris repair themselves as they are severed during these types of eye surgery. This can take up to 6 weeks and some people still have dry eye issues after surgery longer or permanently.
Alvina You'll still need the lubricant drops, at least for a while. I never had dry eyes, but I stopped wearing contacts because like you, my eyes tire easily as I grew older. I then shifted to glasses. I finally had lasik a month ago, and don't regret it at all. Even though at one month post-op, I am not yet 20/20, but it has improved much since the first week. The halos I see at night (which makes me scared to drive at night) seem less bad now, and I hope my vision continues to be better over the next few months. I was prescibed lubricants for the first time in my life, and will likely be weaned off it over time. The decision to get Lasik done is a personal one. Read all the pros and cons and weigh them well. Get a screening, to see if you qualify.
Evie Its not going to improve it.It might make it worse, especially if there are problems, but in all likelihood, it just won't change it.I'm one of the 3% who aren't happy with it.In my case, I think they cut a divit across the surface which can't be corrected (though I haven't checked in the last few years). This means that my eye sight is UNCORRECTABLE at around 20/60. Certainly a hell of a lot better than it was, but still not crisp. I miss having crisp vision (even if it did take glasses). If I were you, I don't think I would use me as a huge reason not to do it:1: I did it very early on when it was "bleeding edge" technology. In particular, they didn't have Wavefront technology for really clearly mapping the eye before they operate.2: I had a horrible prescription to start with. I think now-a-days, they don't even offer Lasik as an option to people whose prescription is as bad as mine.Never-the-less, it is a surgical procedure and surgical procedures do have risks. I think most of the "3 percenters" complain about poor night vision (the so called "rainy windshield" effect), but some have actually completely lost the vision in one or even both eyes. But 97% are thrilled with it. Those are pretty good odds!
Herminia Lasik will not improve a dry-eye problem and has a *chance* of worsening it: temporarily or permanently.Having dry eye problems already is not a good indicator for Lasik treatment.
