What insurance companies cover lasik eye surgery and at what percentage?Carolann and if u could include a website link, that would be great...
Anthony Most insurance companies do not cover LASIK (or refractive) eye surgery, but that is slowly changing. I couldn’t find a list of companies that will cover the procedure, but I would start with the physician you would like to use and see if they have deals worked out with local area insurers. I’ve included a link to a WebMD article briefly describing LASIK and insurance. It’s interesting to note that insurance may not consider the procedure a type of cosmetic surgery if:•If you need it after an injury or as a result of a surgery•If you cannot wear glasses or contacts due to a physical limitation•If you have severe refractive problems (subjective interpretation here).Another article (which I now cannot find) mentioned that arrangements between insurers/employers and LASIK centers fall into two categories: indemnity plans and discount plans. The former allows full payment of the procedure while the other gives you a discount (the article mentioned 50% as an example). However, the discount means you may not receive the full care package. That is, the center instead of discounting the fee only, they might actually cut back on the services they provide. If I were you, I would make sure you want the surgery/need it, pick out a physician you’re comfortable with, talk with her/him about possible payment arrangements, and speak with your tax advisor because you might be able to write off part or all of the expense. If you’re interested in a new health plan, try MostChoice.com. You can research health policies online quickly and speak to local health insurance agents without any obligation at all.You can find MostChoice.com here: http://www.mostchoice.com/health-insuran…Hope this helps, Barnes@MostChoice
Deeann None that I know of and none that I can imagine. Insurance companies want to collect your payments and do not want to pay out benefits. Lasik would be considered optional or cosmetic surgery by them. I did imagine one scenario: the insurance company would cover it if their premiums were higher than the cost of the procedure and included part of their overhead to run the company.
Brinda i've never heard of it being covered. sorry.
