What are the possible longterm effects of lasik?

I know that as of now, nobody knows what the long-term effects are, but I've heard a few predictions, among them:1) Eye cancer (? )2) You could more easily go blind if you accidentally bang your head or your eye against somethingI used to want to get LASIK, but now after hearing these predictions, I'm not so sure anymore...

i wouldnt go for lasik! because its not been around long enough, no one really knows what happens.I used to work in an opticains, and they used to 'recommend' people to have a consultation (they got bonus for doing this) The recommend people to have it done for really minor reasons, considering originally it used to be for people who really had to have it done . But the thing is, it should be a proper medical hospital type of procedure. Its not though, its being deregulated so optical chains can do it.Please be careful, i know i wouldnt have it done!

I did not have enough surface tissue for lasik so I had PRK done instead- it takes longer to heal with more pain but mine healed nicely and my surface tissue regrew wonderfully! The drawback with lasik is that the procedure involves taking the excess tissue of you eye and flaps it around your pupils to correct your vision; however, these flaps may come loose or get sand and other particles in them that may cause them to rupture or tear easily over time- requiring more surgery more frequently in the future. PRK is more like a sculpturing process, whereby the laser actually pulsates your eye surface to form a mound to correct your vision and your tissue rebuilds over top of it again after the surgery- probably better if you plan to swim, ski, and do a lot of athletic activities in the future.

I only know of the eye cancer part, I have not heard of the others. I have had Lasik almost 7 years, my eyes were really bad, I have worn glasses since the 2nd grade, I was 36 when I had the procedure done, they did something called Mono Vision where they over correct one eye and under correct the other so hopefully when I get older I will not need glasses, I am 43 now and I have not had any problems yet. Make sure you have a good eye doctor and you will have no problems, and in the 7 years they have really come up with other Lasik procedures.

I had it done about 8 or 9 years ago. Best money I ever spent in my life. I have never heard of the things you are talking about and I certainly never experienced them.As for the second one, I suppose that could happen if you somehow injure yourself and tear off the corneal flap before it is fully healed. But then, you ARE supposed to take it easy for a while after the surgery. Duh...I suppose there are risks to everything, but for me, the improvement in quality of life would make me do it over again... in a heartbeat. The first morning you wake up and open your eyes and can see the world un-aided is an incredible experience.
