Should i see the doctor after 2 years of lasik surgery?Cathryn i had lasik surgery 2 years ago and everything is perfect so i never went back to the doctor. still no problems but im just kinda thinking since im used to having my eyes checked every year since i was 9, whether i should have my eyes checked. If so, should I go to the same doctor who did my lasik surgery or can i just have the doctors at pearle vision, where i pick up my contact lenses before, check my eyes? thanks!
Ema A person should have their eyes checked on a regular basis whether they have problems or not. Like going to the doctor's for an annual physical whether you are sick or not or the dentist for a regular check up.An optometrist can detect problems, you do not have to see an ophthalmologist or the doctor to who did your surgery.
Nina I wouldn't necessarily go back to the lasik surgeon, but I would go to someone who is comfortable seeing patients after such surgeries. Even thought you have had Lasik and can see great, the other half of the exam is the health of the eyes. You can develop problems years after having lasik and a good doctor can pick up subtle changes if you see them yearly.
Barton "Check yearly; see clearly." You should have your eyes checked at least every two years, if not every year. Even if you are seeing fine, you should have your eye pressure, visual field, ocular motility, and retina evaluated . . .Prevention is key!Still sticks in my mind because it was recent: had a 28 year old female patient who came in for her exam (last one was six years ago when she had her LASIK) --- she finally came in because her vision had become very blurry over the previous month -- well, she had a tumor, a large one, that had probably been growing for a couple years, and it finally reached her optic nerve -- we had to send her to a specialist for treatment --- she lost her vision in that eye, but when she comes in she's always cheerful, because she feels lucky that it hadn't been malignant or expanded anywhere else.I know that is an extreme (and rare) case, but it surprised us too since she was so young and healthy . . .it could have been caught at an earlier stage if she had been coming in regularly and she probably would have kept most of her sight . . .You can go to any optometrist/ophthalmologist for your exam.
Stephine I had PRK about 6 months ago and my surgeon told me that once I have my one year followup with him (and for any other eye problems in the interim like conjunctivitis) my regular optometrist should be the one to take care of my eyes. Once June hits, he will release me from his care. Your regular optometrist can check your eyes with no problems. He/She will be able to see your LASIK scars, and will be able to thoroughly check the health of your eyes, just like your family doctor who gives you a physical once a year...if there's a problem with your cornea, then he may want to to go back to your LASIK surgeon, but chances are very slim that will be the case.
