Is there an age requirement for lasik eye surgery?

Marisela
Do you have to be a legal adult [18 years] to have LASIK, or can anyone get it with parental approval? I'm just curious.

Although The FDA guidelines recognize 18, you are generally better off waiting until 20 - 21, or longer. Dr Dello Russo www.dellorusso.com www.drdellorusso.com/blog

Lasik and Laser eye surgery have become very common now. My cousin got her dental implants and lasik surgery in India by a company called Forerunners Healthcare. The Price for dental and lasik surgery is very less in India. She paid 25% of the price she was quoted in America.Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India They arrange Dental surgery, jaw surgery, lasik eye surgery, Dental Implants etc for foreign patients in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines- about their patient stories. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as dental and eye surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that surgery can be easily handled in India. as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star. Many patients travel from United States of America and UK to get low cost surgery in India. Indian corporate hospitals are comparable to hospitals anywhere in the world. In fact, India has medical facilities that are comparable with the USA, UK and Canada. India offers World Class Medical Facilities, comparable with any of the western countries. India has state of the art Hospitals and the best medical experts. With the best infrastructure, the best possible Medical facilities, accompanied with the most competitive prices, you can get the treatment done in India at the lowest prices. http://www.forerunnershealthcare.comHope this helps.

LASIK is great. I had it done. I went from 20/600+ to 20/20 right and 20/15 left. I'm 54 and could have had my eyes done many years ago, but I'd be back in glasses now.Your eyes grow progressively worse as you get older. I first got glasses around 10. I didn't really need them that badly, but I could see the teacher better from the back of the room. My eyes would get a little worse each year because of "normal" growth (actually abnormal because I needed glasses, but that's normal for people who need glasses). It wasn't until I was about 48 that my eyes quit degrading each year. If LASIK had existed when I was 21 and I had the my eyes zapped, my eyes would have continued to change. I would have had maybe 1 or 2 years of good vision, then back in glasses. The possibility of second, third, etc rounds of LASIK can cause damage to the eye.You may find a doctor with minimal ethics that would do the surgery, but a good doctor would only do the procedure if it was the only way to preserve your vision due to other conditions.

It's recommended that the patient is 21 (stable prescription). At the center I work for, we have done 18 as well as under 18 (with parental consent). For those patients who were under 21, we had them sign an off-label form which states that the doctor recommends surgery @ 21 years or older, and that if you are under 21 you understand that your vision may change/fluctuate.

i think that you actually have to be like...21 or something so that they make sure your eyes are FULLY where they are going to be at for a while. When you are younger your eyes change, so by doing it when you are 20, 21 they make sure that your eyes are mature.....

Reanna
I got mine at 20...but I believe I read that I was 18 because your eyes will still change when you are younger. The catch is that your eyes must be at the same prescription for I think 2 years to show that they arnt getting worse.
