Is there a risk that you can become blind with lasik surgery?Kareem how old do u have to be to get it done because iam only 15. how long is the surgery
Catherina Yes, there is a very very tiny risk that you could lose an eye. If you have them both done at the same time, you could, I suppose lose both. The procedure takes about 20 minutes per eye, normally. The actual "laser" time is less than half that. The rest is basically connecting you to the equipment and calibrating. As I understand it, 97% of the people who have LASEK surgery (note the E) with wavefront technology are thrilled with it.The other 3% are not. Presumably some (very small) portition of that 3% isn't thrilled with blindness. As a minor, you cannot consent to this operation. Your parents would have to OK it. Generally doctors shy away from performing this operation on the very young because their vision is changing so quickly. That is, they might have to perform the surgery again when you are in your mid 20s.Also note that as you get much older, you may find that you have to wear reading glasses anyways, since your lense may be formed perfectly but your optical muscles simply cannot deform it to focus at one or the other extreme. If you were my kid, I'd say to wait 'till your early 20s and do one eye at a time.
Tyrone i believe so...its like those kind of movies when you think it goes ok, then it DOESNT!!!your 15?? !!! chick just get contact lenses!!! leave those for the OLDER peeps!!! :Dyou should look great in glasses too! your young!! hahaha, flaunt it!! :-)
Antonietta There is a risk in any surgery of course but the most common complications are minor. You must be at least 18 with a stable prescription for at least 1 year. I would wait until you are at least 21 before having LASIK though. Ignore the knuckleheads that say to go to the cheapest place in town. You should find a good Ophthalmologist in town and make sure you are comfortable with them before you have any surgery. The surgery lasts about 15 minutes total but expect to be at the MD office for about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. LASIK is about 10 years old but they have been doing similar procedures for over 20. I feel that it is one of the most successful surgeries in medicine but again, it is a surgery and complications can occur. You don't often hear of the success stories but hear all about the patients that aren't so happy.
Julie I have never heard of that but you have to be at least 18 and have stable vision for at least 2 years. They do have lasers now that will actually follow your eye if you look away for whatever reason
Erminia There is a risk of blindness for any type of refractive surgery. That is why you go to a doctor who has had lots of experience and is board certified. You must be at least 18 to have the procedure because you must wait for your eyes to stabalize which normally happens around this age.
Ivette I have a friend who had lasik surgery and the doctor did not do a good job. She has scars on her eyes and her vision is worse than before and there's nothing they can do about it. If you're going to do it, make sure you get a doctor who has done it many, many times and is the best in your area. Even then, there's always a risk.
Dona The surgery is 10 minutes max. As with all surgeries there is always a risk although lasik surgery as it gets more popular seems to be safe. They do not know the long term effects of this type of surgery b/c it is fairly new. You can get it at any age.
Adina There's always a risk of something going wrong with any type of surgery. I had lasik done last June 2006 and it was the best thing I've ever done. But you do need to wait until your eyesight remains relatively stable and that usually happens around 18-21. The actual surgery only takes a few minutes per eye, you can find actual surgery videos on the internet. However, the whole process from the time you get to the surgery location until the time you leave is about 2 1/2 to 3 hours.
Albertina Of course there is such a risk. You are too young to have lasik surgery. I'm pretty sure you have to be at least 18, or 17. It also depends on the type and severity of your eyesight problems. You have to meet certain requirements for that too.As for the length of the surgery, it is quite short.
Earleen yes, there is always a risk.. i think you have to be over 21 yrs and the surgury is only a couple of hours if not less
Nicolas The surgery is only like 3 mins/ eye......i thinkit shouldnt take that long....they just flash a light in your eye and cut the top layer abit.. it cant take hours... you eye would dry outand lol im only 14 but i know somehow :\But who knows.... im a beast!
Evelina There's a risk to everything. If you do it, make sure you go to a certified doctor. I've heard horror stories of people going to a place that was cheap to save a buck and ended up losing their sight.
