Is lens extractions a safe procedure instead of lasik?

I am not a good candidate for lasik and doctor suggested lens extractions, but am very weary, since this is the same procedure used for cataracts surgery, which I do not have and taking my own lenses out is scary.

Was there any mention of PRK surgery? For patients that are not Lasik candidates due to corneal tissue or the like are often candidates for the PRK procedure.
