Is it worth getting lasik surgery?Evalyn Also, is it 100% safe which I don't think is the case, but I think it's 100% risk free against loss of vision if I'm not mistaken? It is a hassle to get contacts year after year with the continually rising cost of contact lenses, eye glasses, eye exams and etc.I wonder, in the long run, is lasik surger more economic than eye glasses/contact lenses? I've also seen people whose vision deteriorate and going back on eye glasses AFTER getting the lasik which seem to be stupid.
Mohammad As estimated by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, LASIK operation did not work for about 2-3% out of more than 1 million patients annually. Statistics by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revealed that, six months following the procedure, 28% of the patients suffered from insufficient tears, 16% blurred vision, 18% difficulty to drive at night and some even experienced long-term eye pain.
Devon Theres no such thing as 100% safe ANYTHING. Even the best surgeons have thier mishaps...you must make an informed decision before you spend that kind of money. Sure, it corrects your DISTANCE vision to a T, so you can see crisp and clear. Depending on the age at which you get LASIK, it would be beneficial to have it done at a younger age (25 -30) before your near vision starts to deterioate. You cant stop your natural lens/near vision from worsening, so you'll still need reading glasses when the time comes (usually 43 and up). This by no means is an excuse not to get your annual exam, as eye docs do health checks in addition to the vision check. So, in essence, it can be worth it to spend the money up front and save the costs of glasses/contacts until you get older and start to experiance presbyopia (focusing disability). Do some research, talk to your eye doc, and weigh the advantages/risks about it!best of luck!
