Is it advisable to get lasik surgery treatment done to get rid of glasses? any drawbacks?Ericka Positives: Quick procedure. Fairly affordable. No longer experimental (it's been around a long time, therefore, they've worked out all of the kinks). Pretty safe. No more glasses. You can wear cool sunglasses again.Negatives: Not reversible. If they make a mistake, it could conceivably cost you your eyesight. Not progressive (won't compensate for Macular Degeneration down the line). Not for the squeamish- they literally slice off layers of your cornea. Although the success rate is very high, there is no guarantee.
Domenic It's great with no drwbacks except for one....Consider your age ...if you are under 30 ...wonderful ...have it done. I had it done and I was 43 ....They told me it would only last a few years because it does not correct age related sight loss (you know ...the middle aged...reading glasses thing...they were right ...after surgery I was 20/20 R and 20/15 L....I still have great far vision but am once again needing reading glasses. So...yes it works and it depends on your situation and your age if the cost is going to be worth it to you.
Mikel I had Lasik surgery done, and I love it. I couldn't be happier with the results. When I had it done about five years ago, they told me that my vision still may worsen over time, and I may need to have the surgery again later in life. I am beginning to see that my vision is not what it was just after the surgery.I had the surgery done when I was about 20 yrs old, and I was needing a new presciption for eyeglasses every year. I am not put off by this however. the results were amazing, my vision was better than 20/20, it is now almost 20/20 (probably). I would recommend this surgery! Now, fiver years after my Lasik, I would imagine that the surgery is even better than before. You'll absolutely love the results, no more needing glasses to check the alarm clock....seeing every leaf on a tree out the window....So, the drawback (that I experienced) is that your vision may still get worse over time. But they (the docs) should tell you about all that stuff.
Jerrell Only a qualified eye surgeon can make the determination if it is right for you. It is not an option for everyone.
Dexter I know a friend that had lasik and her eyes were always itchy, dry, and watery, also about two years later, she was screwed cause her eye sight had changed, she got lasik too early, her doctor said, and she was supposed to wait until her eye sight stabilized before getting lasik done. all that trouble for nothing.
Candice I had it done at 57 for astigmatism.Amazing.Its not supposed to happen, but I can now read without reading glasses. My Doc has a lifetime guarantee. I had the pie cuts to improve my vision even more.
Alina My son had it done about 3 years ago and hasn't had any problems. You can experience a "halo" affect at night, eyes sensitive to sunlight, dry eyes. You may have to get another surgery done later on to correct for reading. Go to a reputable doctor and don't bargain shop. Good luck.
Jacalyn Talk to an expert on this one. Some types of vision problems respond very well, others not at all. I'm not a candidate because I only have one correctable eye, so they're not willing to risk screwing it up.
Caroline Lasik surgery is a very very good procedure. It's a blessing that takes hardly any time to do. some of the side affects can last for a day or two but it is very worth it. The only downside is the cost!!!
Pattie Every surgical procedure -no matter how simple- has some complications or drawbacks. The real questions are: what are they? how serious are they? and how often do they develop? (they don't happen to every patient)Concerning Lasik:- An experienced surgeon must examine you first to decide whether you are fit for the procedure or not. For example, the cornea (transparent part of you eye) must have a certain thickness for the surgeon to be able to operate on it.- One drawback of all eye surgeries is the risk of developing an eye infection. This is very serious, but fortunately very rare nowadays especially if the necessary precautions were taken by the surgical team.- A drawback of Lasik itself is that even though it corrects nearsightedness (being able to see near objects but not far ones), you might need to use reading glasses to see near objects after the operation is successfulAn ophthalmologist can give you more accurate informationTake care...
