Im considering getting intralase lasik eye surgery?Gretchen
My main concern is what happens if I get punched or hit in the eye down the road will this cause the flap to become dislodged? and if it becomes dislodged am I basically blind for life after?

I am a Lasik Coordinator. The flap will heal on its own following the procedure. However, the corneal tissue will never fully or completely heal to its state prior to surgery. If you play alot of contact sports I would recommend PRK which is when they remove the corneal tissue and it grows back on its own eliminating flap complications. The negative of having PRK is that it will be a longer(5-7 days) healing process and more agitating then if you were to have regular Lasik or Intralase. Also, it is good to know that if you go to a Lasik Center they may sway you away from having PRK because Intralase is more expensive and a way for them to make more of a profit.

I REALLY THINK YOU SHOULD DO MORE RESEARCH ON IT. IVE READ A LOT OF NEG. THINGS ABOUT IT, I WAS ALSO CONSIDERING IT FOR MYSELF. DO YOUR HOMEWORK SO MORE BEFORE GETTING IT DONE. ITS BETTER THAN NEVER KNOWING.

I doubt it would make you go blind, but the flap might move and you would have to go in a have it fixed. I've read a few stories about after surgery the flap would have a little wrinkle, and they would just go in a fix it. The link below says something about boxing and lasik.

I had lasik eye surgery 7 years ago and to date, one of the best decisions I ever made. I personally don't think an eye injury would cause any dislodging. Ask your doctor.

A punch or hit in the eye does not reach the eyeball, remember it's the area around the eye that bruises and swells up. So unless someone sticks something like a pencil directly into your eyeball, under your lid, there is no chance to dislodge the eyeball flap this way.Remember, nearly all professional athletes who need it have this procedure done and they get hit with stuff all the time.When you get LASIK, the eye starts to heal itself almost immediately. The only chance for the flap to move at all is within the first couple of days, during which time you will be lying at home and wearing safety goggles anyway and putting drops in your eye all the time. So unless you live with someone inherently violent or psycho who would try and dig your eyeball out directly, you have nothing to worry about.
