If i had lasik surgery done would it interfere with my eligibility to join the military?Forest Hi, The military is starting to do laser surgery for personnel who need critical vision while in service. These include combat soldiers and the like. However, lasik is not allowed if you intend to be a pilot for airplanes or helicopters. If you want refractive surgery, you will need to get a procedure called PRK. This is laser surgery without the "cutting" into the eye. All lasik surgeons also do PRK. It was the routine laser procedure before lasik was developed. There is a little longer healing time, but the eye shows no signs of treatment after you've recovered. This is critical since the "flap" from LASIK has a very minimal chance of rupture and the military has determined that this very small risk is not an option for a pilot.
Dora My best friend had it while she was in the military, I would think maybe only what part of the military... airforce maybe would consider it to be vital info... otherwise I don't think it's a big deal..
Nell i am sure this surgery corrects the vision but not sure about the military accept that type of correction ---a permanent damage to cornea
