I went to a Canadian company that has an office in Syracuse, NY. I was told that my astigmatism is so high, that the FDA has not yet approved Lasik for my prescription yet in the USA. However, they said that I can drive to one of their Canada locations, and have it done there, since Canada has approved Lasik surgery for twice my prescription. My family is very weary of me doing this, should I have anything to worry about?

I would check out this site www.asklasikdocs.com. There are excellent opthamologists on this site who specialize in laser surgery. You can post a question and they will be sure to get back to you!! I had custom intralase (Blade free lasik)done six months ago and I am pleased with the results. You really have to do your research about this elective surgery and ensure you find a well respected surgeon in the field who has performed thousands of operations. Good Luck :) P.S My surgery was done in Canada.

It really doesn't matter where you get your surgery done, it matters most who does your surgery. I had Lasik done eight years ago from a doctor in upstate NY (not very far from where you are from it sounds). I worked for him, but I would have gone to him anyway even if I didn't work for him. Research your surgeon: find out how long they have been in practice, how many surgeries they have done, the "outcomes" of their patients, if they are accessable after hours, etc. My surgeon gave me his cell phone number to call him at any time if needed (and this was not just because I worked there, he gives his phone number to every single one of his patients and even calls them the night of surgery to make sure they are doing alright). Anyway, these issues are important. Good luck in making your decision!

Yes you have`a lot to worry about. My brother got LASIK surgery done in Canada (and he had terrible vision). After the surgery, he had to get follow up visits. They kept sending him to a doctor in the US. The doctor didnt charge him anything for the follow up visits. My brother went to the doctor one day and his office was closed. I would never have the surgery done anywhere else.

Definitely go to an experienced clinic - there will be less risks involved with a surgeon who is experienced in the field of eye surgery. Over here in the UK there is an excellent laser eye surgery clinic in London. On their site there is some info on safety in the Q&As section which you might want to read, http://www.focusclinics.com/faq.php#faqli2, or read about the treatment itself, http://www.focusclinics.com/treatments.php.

Are your eyes so bad that you are blind? If not, don't risk them. Or, do the 1 at a time. When 1 heals you know it worked, Then do the other.
