LASIK eye surgery is generally considered to be a safe and effective method of treating near-sightedness, far-sightedness, and astigmatism and millions of people undergo this procedure every year throughout the world. No surgery is without risks or complications, however, and this must be understood and accepted before making the decision. The most common side effects of LASIK eye surgery are dry eyes and glare. The incidence of these are debated between proponents and opponents of the surgery. The FDA considers the risks to be low enough to approve the technology required for LASIK (microkeratomes, excimer lasers, etc.)Safety can be increased by selecting a skilled surgeon using the best technology. Studies show that experience is one of the most important factors in selecting a surgeon.

I would be extremely hesitant to undergo LASIK.My father had eye surgery performed by one of the most well known firms who regularly advertise on TV.He has quite severe complictaions from the operation including 'floaters' in his eyes, and general degredation of his sight. It turns out they don't even have to be medically qualified to perform the operation, and are called 'Machine Technicians'!!!!

My mother had very serious complications from LASIK that led to really fast cell reproduction in one eye, and that problem actually led to retinal detachment/blindness in the eye. She had to have a lot of work done to correct the retinal detachment before her other retina detached too (it's a sympathetic thing). Now it's several years later and she still has a lot of pain and some blindness in her left eye. She is also starting to develop cataracts, but I don't recall if the cataracts are a result of the LASIK/retinal detachment or not.

i fear it too, when i was younger i wanted to do it but i still think it's a relatively new procedure. i don't think the sample of data is large enough for me to change my mind. plus it seems like u can go just about to any eye doctor and get it.for some reason i fear waking up at the age of like 55 and being blind!!!

Near-sightedness is progressive in life. Lasik will make your lens prescription even worse when the time comes.Spend your money on a multi-color tattoo and watch the colors meld instead.
