How can we know the long term effects of lasik eye surgery?Brenna By waiting a long time and following those who have had Lasik surgery. Each year more data is gathered. What do you mean by long term? 1 yr, 5yr, 20yr.
Chery By waiting a long time ! Isn't that the only answer you could expect? Seriously Laser surgery has been going on 5-10 years now and it appears extremely safe PROVIDING the surgeon does NOT operate on thin corneas. The work-up is the most important aspect of lase surgery. The top surgeons are most meticulous before proceeding. There were some early cases in which "night vision" was impaired but these were on patients who did NOT pass the "pupil size" test that is done to-day. If a patient has abnormally large pupils, laser surgery may NOT be indicated.(I'm an O.D.)
Nam Like all long term studies -it's very very difficuilt. Tracking people for 10 years? Only when more and more people get the surgery done- and when patients come in with complaints later on can we get an idea of the effects.
