Can people in the military get lasik eye surgery?Brady
I've been hearing you can't get the surgery done if you play sports or do a lot of physical stuff .Well, I just joined the military & I hate my bad vision. Will I be allowed to get the surgery? And if so can I use my military medical insurance towards it? (I'm guessing no, but I might as well ask to make sure)

Yes, you can get it done. You may or may not have to pay for it. My husband got his done at Walter Reed and I know they do it at Trippler in Hawaii, in Germany, and at Ft Hood as well. There are few Army hospitals where you can get it done, but I don't know all the places. I don't know about the other services, but I'm sure they have places as well. You'll have to get an exam to make sure you meet the requirements and most places require a memo from your commander saying you can get it done. After that, you'll be put on a waiting list and they'll call you when they have a slot available. It took a couple of months before my husband got called. I should have put my paperwork in at the same time, but I chickened out. Anyway, it's worth a shot. The worst they can do is say "no" and then you can still go out and pay for it yourself. Also, as an active duty member, you don't have military "insurance" per se. You are required to use the on base facilities unless they give you a referral to go off post. The only way you can go to a cilvilian hospital is if you are in an area where there is not a military hospital immediately available.

yes, you can get the surgery. you will pay for it though.

yea one of my soccer coaches was in the army and him and his friend whos also in the army got laser eye surgery. he's about 30 and he says its one of the best things hes ever done
