Am i a candidate for lasik surgery?

Alvin
I am eighteen years old with what my optician calls progressive myopia. Am I a candidate? If not, why not?

Lavonda
If you indeed have 'progressive myopia' and you find that each time you visit the optometrist your script has changed then you are probably not a suitable candidate at the moment. To do the surgery they like to see that your script has become stable and stopped progressing. Otherwise after they do the surgery your eyes are just going to keep getting worse.Don't worry you are probably only a few years away having a stable prescription (and LASIK procedures will probably be even better given a few years). Once your script has become stable your suitability will depend on corneal thickness ect.

why don't you ask an opthamologist? opticians are only for glasses.

Joanne
The only people that can tell you if you can have Lasik are the Doctors that perform Lasik. However, please go to a reputable place. I went to a clinic that does Lasik, and was told I was "good to go". Went for a second opinion to the Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute, and was diagnosed with Keratoconus, a huge reason to NOT have Lasik. So be carefull, remember this is a business and they want money, make sure you find someone interested in your eye health.

Brain
Whether or not you are candidate depends on your corneal thickness, the surface topography of your corneal, your refraction, your corneal health and whether your prescription is stable. A LASIK surgeon needs to assess your eyes to answer this question. However, most surgeons will not do surgery on people under 21 and your prescription must not have changed in the past two years.
